Brand name: Temovate Generic name: Clobetasol What is the most important information I should know about Temovate? • Do not use plastic bandages dressings or diapers that do not allow air to circulate to the area (occlusive dressings) unless your doctor directs you to do so. The use of occlusive dressings can greatly increase the amount of drug the body absorbs. • Do not use Temovate to treat any area of the body that it is not prescribed for. This could be dangerous. • Temovate is not approved for use by children younger than12 years of age. Do not use Temovate to treat a child unless it is prescribed by a doctor for the child. Children are more sensitive to the effects of Temovate. • Do not use more than 50 grams of Temovate cream ointment foam or gel or more than 50 mL of the lotion in 1 week or apply it for longer than 2 weeks in a row unless otherwise directed by your doctor. • The OLUX foam is flammable. Avoid fire flame and smoking during and immediately following application of the medication. What is Temovate? • Temovate is a topical steroid. It reduces or inhibits the actions of chemicals in the body that cause inflammation redness and swelling. • Temovate is used to treat inflammation caused by a number of conditions such as allergic reactions eczema and psoriasis. • Temovate may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide. What should I discuss with my healthcare provider before using Temovate? • Return to your doctor if the condition does not improve or if it gets worse. Temovate alone will not treat the condition if it is an infection. • Temovate is in the FDA pregnancy category C. This means that it is not known whether Temovate will be harmful to an unborn baby. Do not use this medication without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant or could become pregnant during treatment. If it is necessary to use Temovate during pregnancy the smallest amount possible should be applied for the shortest time necessary to treat the condition under the supervision of a doctor. • It is not known whether Temovate passes into breast milk. Do not use Temovate without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby. How should I use Temovate? • Apply the medication exactly as directed by your doctor. If you do not understand these directions ask your pharmacist nurse or doctor to explain them to you. • Wash your hands before and after each application unless Temovate is being used to treat a hand condition. • Apply a small amount to the affected area and rub it gently into the skin. • Apply the scalp lotion as directed. • The foam should be dispensed into the cap of the can onto a saucer or other cool surface or directly onto the lesion. Dispensing the medication directly onto the hands is not recommended (unless the hands are the affected area) as the foam will being to melt immediately upon contact with warm skin. Rinse the hands with cold water before applying the medication to prevent melting of the foam. If the can seems warm or the foam is runny run the can under cold water. • When applying Temovate to an area where hair is present move the hair away from the affected area so that the medication can be applied to the skin. Gently massage the medication into the affected area. • Use caution on areas where the skin creases such as armpits knees and elbows. These areas may absorb more medication. Also avoid the eyes mouth and mucous membranes. • If you need to protect the area it can be covered with a breathable cotton-gauze dressing. Avoid using plastic occlusive dressings that do not allow air to circulate to the area. • Do not use more than 50 grams of Temovate cream ointment foam or gel or more than 50 mL of the lotion in 1 week or apply it for longer than 2 weeks in a row unless otherwise directed by your doctor. • Do not use Temovate to treat any area of the body that it is not prescribed for. This could be dangerous. • It is important to use Temovate regularly to get the most benefit. • Store Temovate at room temperature away from moisture and heat. What happens if I miss a dose? • Apply the missed dose as soon as you remember. However if it is almost time for the next dose skip the dose you missed and apply the next regularly scheduled dose. Do not use a double dose of this medication unless otherwise directed by your doctor. What happens if I overdose? • An overdose of Temovate is not likely to threaten life. If the medication is ingested or if a large amount is used over a large area and side effects are being experienced call an emergency room or a poison control left for advice. Do not use this medication if you are allergic to fluticasone (Flonase Flovent) salmeterol (Serevent) or milk proteins or if you are having an asthma attack or severe COPD symptoms. Salmeterol has been shown to increase the risk of asthma-related death. If you have any of these other conditions you may need a dose adjustment or special tests to safely use this medication: • a food or drug allergy; • heart disease or high blood pressure; • epilepsy or other seizure disorder; • an infection of any kind; • a weak immune system; • diabetes; • glaucoma; • tuberculosis; • osteoporosis; • a thyroid disorder; or • liver disease. FDA pregnancy category C. It is not known whether fluticasone and salmeterol is harmful to an unborn baby. Before using this medication tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment. How should I use this medication? Use this medication exactly as it was prescribed for you. Do not use the medication in larger amounts or use it for longer than recommended by your doctor. Follow the directions on your prescription label. This medication comes with patient instructions for safe and effective use and directions for priming the inhaler device if needed. Follow these directions carefully. Do not use fluticasone and salmeterol inhalation to treat an asthma attack that has already begun. It will not work fast enough. Use only a fast-acting inhalation medication. Advair Diskus is a powder form of fluticasone and salmeterol that comes with a special inhaler device pre-loaded with blister packs containing measured doses of the medicine. The device opens and loads a blister each time you use the inhaler. This device is not to be used with a spacer. Advair HFA is an aerosol form of fluticasone and salmeterol that comes in a canister that is used with an actuator inhaler device. Use only the inhaler device provided with Advair HFA. This device is not to be used with a spacer. Shake the Advair HFA inhaler for at least 5 seconds before each spray. Keep track of the number of sprays you have used and throw away the Advair HFA canister after 120 sprays even if it feels like there is still medicine in it. If you also use a steroid medication do not stop using the steroid suddenly or you may have unpleasant withdrawal symptoms. Talk with your doctor about using less and less of the steroid before stopping completely. Call your doctor right away if any of your asthma medications do not seem to work as well in treating or preventing asthma attacks. Call your doctor for preventive treatment if you are exposed to chicken pox or measles. These conditions can be serious or even fatal in people who are using steroid medicines. This medication side effects Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face lips tongue or throat. Before using fluticasone and salmeterol inhalation tell your doctor if you are using any of the following drugs: • amiodarone (Cordarone); • a diuretic or “water pill”; • HIV medicines such as atazanavir (Reyataz) ritonavir (Norvir) indinavir (Crixivan) nelfinavir (Viracept) or saquinavir (Invirase); • an MAO inhibitor such as isocarboxazid (Marplan) tranylcypromine (Parnate) phenelzine (Nardil) rasagiline (Azilect) or selegiline (Eldepryl Emsam); • an antidepressant such as amitriptyline (Elavil) desipramine (Norpramin) fluoxetine (Prozac) nefazodone or imipramine (Tofranil); • antibiotics such as clarithromycin (Biaxin) or telithromycin (Ketek); • antifungal medications such as ketoconazole (Nizoral) or itraconazole (Sporanox); or • a beta-blocker such as atenolol (Tenormin) carvedilol (Coreg) metoprolol (Lopressor Toprol) and others.
