Do NOT use Betapace (Sotalol) if:
you are allergic to any ingredient in Betapace (Sotalol)
you have certain heart problems (eg severe low heart rate uncontrolled heart failure certain types of abnormal heartbeat rhythm) low blood potassium or magnesium levels severe kidney problems or a history of asthma
you are taking cisapride astemizole terfenadine mibefradil dofetilide or a theophylline (eg aminophylline)

Before using Betapace (Sotalol):
Some medical conditions may interact with Betapace (Sotalol). Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions especially if any of the following apply to you:
if you are pregnant planning to become pregnant or are breast-feeding
if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine herbal preparation or dietary supplement
if you have allergies to medicines foods or other substances
if you have breathing or lung problems (eg chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder [COPD] asthma) a decreased appetite an overactive thyroid kidney problems bronchitis diabetes blood flow problems a tumor on your adrenal gland or other heart problems
if you are scheduled for surgery
Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Betapace (Sotalol). Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines especially any of the following:
Indomethacin or phenylpropanolamine because they may decrease Betapace (Sotalol)'s effectiveness
Clonidine diltiazem mibefradil nifedipine or verapamil because the risk of side effects such as low blood pressure or heart problems may be increased
Amiodarone antiarrhythmics (eg quinidine propafenone) arsenic cisapride dofetilide droperidol H1 antagonists (eg astemizole terfenadine) ketanserin macrolides and ketolides (eg erythromycin azithromycin) mefloquine phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors (eg sildenafil) phenothiazines (eg thioridazine) quinolones (eg ciprofloxacin) or ziprasidone because the risk of abnormal heart rhythms may be increased
Bupivacaine cocaine epinephrine insulin lidocaine meglitinide antidiabetics (eg nateglinide) nifedipine or quinazolines (eg prazosin) because the risk of their side effects may be increased by Betapace (Sotalol)
Certain stimulants (eg albuterol pseudoephedrine) phenformin or theophyllines (eg aminophylline) because their effectiveness may be decreased by Betapace (Sotalol)

How to use Betapace (Sotalol):
Use Betapace (Sotalol) as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.
Take Betapace (Sotalol) by mouth with or without food. Try to take it the same way (either with food or without food) each time you take your dose. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you have questions about taking Betapace (Sotalol) with food.
Do not take an antacid that has aluminum or magnesium in it within 2 hours before or after you take Betapace (Sotalol).
Taking Betapace (Sotalol) at the same time each day will help you remember to take it.
Continue to use Betapace (Sotalol) even if you feel well. Do not miss any doses.
If you miss a dose of Betapace (Sotalol) skip the missed dose. Do not take 2 doses at once.
Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Betapace (Sotalol).
Important safety information:
Betapace (Sotalol) may cause drowsiness dizziness or lightheadedness. These effects may be worse if you take it with alcohol or certain medicines. Use Betapace (Sotalol) with caution. Do not drive or perform other possibly unsafe tasks until you know how you react to it.
Betapace (Sotalol) may cause dizziness lightheadedness or fainting; alcohol hot weather exercise or fever may increase these effects. To prevent them sit up or stand slowly especially in the morning. Sit or lie down at the first sign of any of these effects.
Tell your doctor or dentist that you take Betapace (Sotalol) before you receive any medical or dental care emergency care or surgery.
Do not suddenly stop taking Betapace (Sotalol). Sharp chest pain irregular heartbeat and sometimes heart attack may occur if you suddenly stop Betapace (Sotalol). The risk may be greater if you have certain types of heart disease. Heart disease is common and you may not know you have it. Your doctor should slowly lower your dose over several weeks if you need to stop taking it. Limit physical activity while you are lowering your dose. If new or worsened chest pain or other heart problems occur contact your doctor right away. You may need to start taking Betapace (Sotalol) again.
Lab tests including heart function kidney function and blood pressure monitoring may be performed while you use Betapace (Sotalol). These tests may be used to monitor your condition or check for side effects. Be sure to keep all doctor and lab appointments.
PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you become pregnant contact your doctor. You will need to discuss the benefits and risks of using Betapace (Sotalol) while you are pregnant. Betapace (Sotalol) is found in breast milk. Do not breast-feed while taking Betapace (Sotalol).
Possible side effects of Betapace (Sotalol):
All medicines may cause side effects but many people have no or minor side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:
Dizziness; drowsiness; headache; light-headedness; tiredness; trouble sleeping.
Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur:
Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth face lips or tongue); abnormally fast slow or irregular heartbeat; changes in vision; decreased appetite; excessive thirst; numbness of an arm or leg; severe or persistent nausea vomiting or diarrhea; severe stomach pain; sharp or crushing chest pain; sudden leg pain; sudden severe headache vomiting dizziness or fainting; sudden shortness of breath; unusual sweating.

If OVERDOSE is suspected:

Salmeterol has been shown to increase the risk of asthma-related death. It is critical that you use only the prescribed dose of this medicine and follow all patient instructions for safe use of the medication. If you have any of these other conditions you may need a dose adjustment or special tests to safely use this medication: a food or drug allergy; heart disease or high blood pressure; epilepsy or other seizure disorder; an infection of any kind; a weak immune system; diabetes; glaucoma; tuberculosis; osteoporosis; a thyroid disorder; or liver disease. FDA pregnancy category C. It is not known whether fluticasone and salmeterol is harmful to an unborn baby. Before using this medication tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment. How should I use this medication? Use this medication exactly as it was prescribed for you. Do not use the medication in larger amounts or use it for longer than recommended by your doctor. Follow the directions on your prescription label. This medication comes with patient instructions for safe and effective use and directions for priming the inhaler device if needed. Follow these directions carefully. Do not use fluticasone and salmeterol inhalation to treat an asthma attack that has already begun. It will not work fast enough. Use only a fast-acting inhalation medication. Advair Diskus is a powder form of fluticasone and salmeterol that comes with a special inhaler device pre-loaded with blister packs containing measured doses of the medicine. The device opens and loads a blister each time you use the inhaler. This device is not to be used with a spacer. Advair HFA is an aerosol form of fluticasone and salmeterol that comes in a canister that is used with an actuator inhaler device. Use only the inhaler device provided with Advair HFA. This device is not to be used with a spacer. Shake the Advair HFA inhaler for at least 5 seconds before each spray. Keep track of the number of sprays you have used and throw away the Advair HFA canister after 120 sprays even if it feels like there is still medicine in it. If you also use a steroid medication do not stop using the steroid suddenly or you may have unpleasant withdrawal symptoms. Talk with your doctor about using less and less of the steroid before stopping completely. Call your doctor right away if any of your asthma medications do not seem to work as well in treating or preventing asthma attacks. An increased need for medication could be an early sign of a serious asthma attack. If you use a peak flow meter call your doctor if your numbers are lower than normal. Asthma is usually treated with a combination of different drugs. To best treat your condition use all of your medications as directed by your doctor. Use the medication as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose skip the missed dose and wait until your next regularly scheduled dose. Do not use extra medicine to make up the missed dose. What happens if I overdose? Seek emergency medical attention if you think you have used too much of this medicine. Overdose symptoms may include angina or chest pain fast or irregular heartbeats seizures tremor weakness headache nausea and vomiting. What should I avoid while using this medication? Do not use a second form of salmeterol (such as Serevent) or use a similar inhaled bronchodilator such as formoterol (Foradil) unless your doctor has told you to. Advair Diskus (fluticasone and salmeterol) can lower the blood cells that help your body fight infections. Avoid being near people who are sick or have infections. Call your doctor for preventive treatment if you are exposed to chicken pox or measles. These conditions can be serious or even fatal in people who are using steroid medicines. This medication side effects Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face lips tongue or throat. Before using fluticasone and salmeterol inhalation tell your doctor if you are using any of the following drugs: amiodarone (Cordarone); a diuretic or water pill; HIV medicines such as atazanavir (Reyataz) ritonavir (Norvir) indinavir (Crixivan) nelfinavir (Viracept) or saquinavir (Invirase); an MAO inhibitor such as isocarboxazid (Marplan) tranylcypromine (Parnate) phenelzine (Nardil) rasagiline (Azilect) or selegiline (Eldepryl Emsam); an antidepressant such as amitriptyline (Elavil) desipramine (Norpramin) fluoxetine (Prozac) nefazodone or imipramine (Tofranil); antibiotics such as clarithromycin (Biaxin) or telithromycin (Ketek); antifungal medications such as ketoconazole (Nizoral) or itraconazole (Sporanox); or a beta-blocker such as atenolol (Tenormin) carvedilol (Coreg) metoprolol (Lopressor Toprol) and others.
